British “Grenadier Guards” enlisted man’s cap
Raised at Bruges, Belgium in 1656 during the time Charles II was in exile. Originally called the “First Regiment of Foot Guards,” after the regiment’s heroism at the battle of Waterloo in 1815, the name was changed to the “Grenadier Guards.” In fact, this is the only regiment in the British Army to have gained their title as a direct result of a specific military action. The cap badge, which was also adopted in 1815 represents a lit grenade, a symbol also seen on many other military badges. |
