Soviet Militia officer’s visor cap
I went down to the CeBIT exhibition in Hanover, Germany several years ago to look at computer stuff. Having done my official duty and with a little time on my hands, I headed back into town where I happened upon a flea market. The Russian emigree who was selling this cap spoke only a smattering of German so our negotiations were rather difficult. I finally agreed to meet his price of 40 marks, which I still thought was high. What I hadn’t understood was that I had bought the entire uniform—belt, medals and all—except for the pants, which he was wearing. I gave him an extra 10 marks. Granted, a deal is a deal, but fair is still fair.
