East German “Vopo” NCO’s visor cap
It’s easy to get so caught up in the collecting aspect that one forgets about the people who actually wore these hats. For me, this Volkspolizei cap serves as an angry reminder of a visit to East Berlin back in the late seventies. Apparently I had taken a photograph of the Brandenburg Gate that had accidently included a section of the Berlin wall. I was immediately accosted by two of these fellows who confiscated my film and jabbed me with the business end of an AK-47 during a lengthy and unnecessarily rough interview. I picked up this cap 15 years later within spitting distance of the spot at which I was detained. I've been told that the officer's style badge, combined with the green enlisted man's chincords indicates that this hat is for an NCO.
