New York PD detective’s visor cap
My good friend Helmuth, a retired NYPD officer, sent me this unissued cap. The gold-tone badge indicates that this is for a detective. Higher ranking officers also have gold chinstraps. Alas, I don’t know why these gold badges never seem to be numbered. If you know, please drop me a line. On the other hand, my friend Amy explained why these hats have eight points:

"The N.Y.P.D. eight-point hat, which has been in use since 1928, is symbolic of the eight original members of the first Watch, in Dutch colonial New Amsterdam."

Many thanks, Amy!
