French army majorís dress kepi (1940)
This is an interesting officerís kepi dating from the Battle of France in 1940. The 411 refers to a pioneer regiment attached to the First Army under General Blanchard. The most interesting feature is the fourth row of braid around the crown, which indicates a major. This was clearly added in the field, since the cap started out as a standard captainís cap and the madder-red top does not continue past the third row of braid. I can trace the history of this historic unit as far as Dunkirk, but donít know if they ever made it to England. Help from readers would be appreciated. By the way, the cap is marked S.G. or S.C. insideópossibly the initials of the officer in question.
